McQuaid Invitational

Once again, it is McQuaid week!  The 48th edition of Rochester's top Cross Country meet gets underway with the gun going off for first of twenty-six races at 9am sharp on Saturday.  While we don't run until later in the day (see our schedule below), I plan on arriving bright and early to see Zach's cousins race at 9:36, 10:09, and then 12:40 (which is also our first race).  Complete information is available at the McQuaid Invitational web site.

Many parents are planning on running the Open race this year.  It starts at 5:10pm, right after our final race of the day.  If you haven't entered yet, please do so here.  Entering by noon on Friday guarantees a shirt and has a fee of just $10, rather than the $20 fee at the meet.

The full schedule is available here, but I have listed our races below:
1:03pm Race #14 Sophomore Boys (and ninth graders)
2:26pm Race #18 Girls Varsity "B" (all girls not in the top six)
3:38pm Race #22 Boys Unseeded Varsity AAA-2 (our top seven that are not Sophomores)
3:58pm Race #23 Girls "Mixed" Varsity AAA (our top six girls)
4:45pm Race #25 Boys Varsity "B"  (our 11th and 12th graders, other than the top seven)
5:10pm Race #26 Alumni Open Race (all parents and any alumni that happen to be in town)

The Girls Varsity AAA race is "MIxed", meaning there are Seeded teams and Unseeded teams in the same race.  We have been classified as Unseeded and will be scored against the 10 teams in that category, while the 12 seeded teams will be scored separately.  We do plan to do a merge of the results and see how we stack up against the seeded teams.

8-0

It looks like yesterday's post did not take, so there will be a bonus entry today.

Monday's meet at Seneca Park was expected to be a tight battle between Schroeder and Sutherland, and it sure was!  The boys race went off first and our team got out well, with 13 boys passing the mile mark in 13 seconds between 5:32 and 5:45.  At this point, the runners disappear for a long loop, and when they came back into my view at about 2.25 miles, we were holding up well, with Will and Justin battling Sutherland's top runner, John well ahead of their third runner and Peter and Ben ahead of #4.  Sutherland's Will Phelan eventually unleashed a strong kick to overtake Arcadia's Brian Northrup and win by six seconds, but Justin and Will went 3-4, with the top Schroeder times on this course (we hadn't been here since 2008), John finished 7th, and Peter and Ben went 10-11, for a 23-33 victory over Sutherland, and a 24-32 win over a surprisingly strong Arcadia team.

Our JV Boys continued their strong performance, with the top seven finishing just 27 seconds apart, in times of 18:11 - 18:38 for this 5K course.  In all, 17 runners broke 19 minutes to make it onto the top 35 Webster Schroeder list.

The girls knew they were in for a tough battle, and perhaps went out a little too quickly, dominating the first mile, coming through in 6:06-6:30 for the top six.  Sutherland made their move in the back loop and with 1/2 mile to go, the race was very close.  Val and Amanda opened up a big lead to go 1-2 and destroy the school record on 20:14, by running 19:24 and 19:32.  Natalie couldn't quite hang on to Sutherland's second girl, but claimed 5th place, and a coveted newspaper spot!  Kelsie finished just behind their fourth runner and Julia stayed safely ahead of #6, allowing the girls to earn a 26-29 win.

While the NYS Sportswriters took away their love this week, the rankings on NY Milesplit tell a different story.  They took notice of our strong performance at East Aurora, and ranked our girls in Class A.  They also have Canandaigua, Rush-Henrietta ranked 3-4-5 heading into the showdown at McQuaid on Saturday.

Seneca Park

Today marks a very rare Monday XC league meet.  We travel to Seneca Park to face Arcadia, Batavia, Olympia and Sutherland.  On the girls side, Sutherland is ranked 22nd in Class B and Batavia is 24th, so they should give us some good competition.  Not surprisingly, we lost our spot in the rankings, on the heels of our 27-28 loss to Thomas.  What is surprising is that we were not replaced in the rankings by Thomas, but instead by Hilton who was placed at 25th in Class A, fourth in the Section behind R-H at #3, Penfield at #7 and Canandaigua at #8.  This is strange because Hilton was well behind R-H and Penfield at the GCC invitational, their top runner was out for that meet and their league meet last week, and our speed ratings from East Aurora put us comfortably ahead of Hilton's performance at GCC.

I think Thomas had earned that spot in the top 25.

On the boys side, Arcadia looks pretty decent this year, but it should come down to Schroeder vs. Sutherland for the win.  The computer has the match-up scored 28-28, with several finishes within two to four seconds, meaning it will be easy for the meet to go either way.

In case anyone needs last minute directions to the starting line:

EA Invite

After the excellent race on Wednesday, with PRs almost across the board, expectations were a little lower for the East Aurora Invitational this weekend.  And when the rain woke me up at 6am and I took a look at the radar, it seemed times might be on the slow side.  But never count the Warriors out!

There were occasional showers throughout the meet, but the East Aurora course holds up pretty well in wet conditions, and our Varsity Boys were the first ones to take advantage of the fast course.  With East Aurora dominating the race, and Lake Shore, Lockport, Frontier and Orchard Park all outrunning us up front, it was  hard to imagine a favorable outcome, but with only 49 seconds separating our top seven, we were able to put seven ahead of the 5th men from each of those teams, and placed 3rd behind EA and Lockport.

The girls thought that a place higher than third was not possible, with EA and Canandaigua entered, but at the starting line we noticed that the top girls were going to be spectating, and the race for second would be wide open.  At the mile mark, it was tough to score precisely, but it was clear that Lockport, Frontier and Willy South were all ahead of us.  Our girls moved up nicely during the second mile, and had closed to within six points of Lockport.  Then the third mile was huge, with continued advancement, allowing the girls to capture second place, sixteen points ahead of Lockport!

The JV Boys know that, while we might not have a real presence at the front of races, we have one of the deepest teams in the state, and East Aurora was not going to be anywhere near 73 points ahead of us.  The first mile saw East Aurora going out in their usual front positions, while we were mixed in with about 10-12 runners from other schools.  But the second mile started to go our way, as we moved up and the front of the race started to look like a dual meet between EA and Schroeder, with EA holding a solid edge.  The third mile saw the trend continue, with our top ten runners moving up nicely.  With a third of a mile to go, it looked like we might actually have a shot, and sure enough, our momentum continued as we wound up putting seven ahead of their fifth, for a 28-32 victory!

The JV Girls were down to seven runners, due to illness, but they were determined to continue the positive performance streak.  Nanaka got out near the top ten, with Kara also out quickly.  The others were more conservative early.  Over the course of the race, Nanaka moved up steadily, finally taking fifth and spoiling East Aurora's bid for a perfect score of 15.  Kara made a run at my niece, who was running in tenth place, the final T-shirt spot, but settled for a big PR and 14th place.  Megan moved up steadily throughout the race, and Rachel led Liz and Courtney through the crowd, to all place in the top 29 and pull the team to a third place finish, just eight points away from the second place trophy.

State Rankings

This past weekend's invitational activity allowed the NYS Sportswriters Association to issue their first set of New York State XC rankings for 2012.  You can find a link to the rankings on the NYSSA Rankings page.

With our girls finishing relatively close to #8 ranked Rush-Henrietta at last weekend's race at Bristol Mountain (that officially had no team scoring), they ended up being ranked 17th in Class A!

This weekend, we face a bigger challenge, as East Aurora's girls are ranked #2 in Class B and Canandaigua is ranked #3 in Class A.  BTW, Other girls teams from Section V that are ranked include Penfield (#12 in Class A), HF-L, Mendon, Mercy and Batavia (#s 8, 12, 19 and 20 in Class B), and Geneseo and Oakfield-Alabama (#s 8 and 10 in Class D).

In the small school race tomorrow, Fredonia (#5 in Class C) is the clear favorite.  They are led by Lauren Reyda, who starts off the year with the fourth fastest Tully speed rating in Class C, and could win the race by over a minute.  Notre Dame - Batavia may be able to give Fredonia a bit of a challenge.

For the Boys rankings, Thomas opens up the season ranked 9th in Class A, with R-H at 15th.  Section V is well-represented in Class B, with Mendon, Brighton and HF-L taking the 3rd, 8th and 15th spots.  In Class D, Campbell-Savona is 4th and Notre Dame - Batavia is 6th, although I believe they have been moved up to Class C.

We will also see two ranked boys teams from Section VI this weekend.  East Aurora is ranked #1 in Class B and will be in our race, while Alden will be in the small school race and is ranked #4 in Class C.

D&C XC Preview

Jim Castor wrote a nice XC preview article for the D&C that was published today.  Most of you can probably view the article through this link, but I think the D&C limits access to a certain number of articles per some time period.

One boys team missing from the article was the Fairport Boys.  Expect some fire from them this afternoon, as they try to avenge that slight by beating three teams that were mentioned (Thomas, Victor and Schroeder).

On the girls side, of the teams in our meet today, only Schroeder was mentioned.  This may provide some bulletin board material for Thomas, Fairport and Victor.

Bristol Results and Wednesday's Meet

In case you had trouble finding the results from Saturday's meet, they are available at Yen Timing.  Here are the girls results and the boys results.

Despite the fact that the meet information said that there would be no team scoring, our girls are reported as 2nd out of 12 complete teams, and the boys were 3rd out of 15!

Next up is our league meet on Wednesday at Webster Park.  This is our lone "Home" meet for the year, so we are hoping for a large turnout from the fans!  The boys race is scheduled to start at 4:30pm, with the girls to follow, probably close to 5pm.  Our opponents include our friends and rivals from Webster Thomas, who had a 1-2-3 finish at their league meet last week, Fairport, whose Boys were the best of 61 teams at last weekend's Vernon-Verona-Sherrill invitational, Victor, whose top three Boys placed 3rd, 6th and 8th at Bristol on Saturday and Spencerport.

The girls dual meets should be very close, with Thomas much improved over last year and Fairport and Victor having tighter packs.

A Pair of 3-1s

Both the boys and girls opened the Monroe County league meet schedule by taking three out of four dual meets yesterday.  Both teams had convincing wins over Churchville-Chili, Eastridge and East Rochester, while giving Mendon a bit of a battle.

The boys were first and the race went out slow, with Jacob Hanns of ER being the early leader, as Mendon held back.  Our boys took advantage of a good line from the start to the first turn to be well-represented up front.  Mendon started to move up during the second mile, but Will was able to open a decent lead.  Early in the third mile, we were still within striking distance, but Zach and Peter were starting to fade.  Justin made a very strong move late to finish second behind Will, and John was able to get past Mendon's 5-6-7 pack and almost caught their fourth runner in the process.

The girls race was quite similar.  Mendon went out easy, so Karli O'Neill took a big lead early, as Val ran with Amanda.  When it was clear that Amanda was going to be third, Val picked it up a bit, but Karli's lead was too big and she settled for second.  In the meantime, Natalie, Katie and Julia gamely chased the Mendon girls, but didn't have quite enough to stay with them (except Katie, who had a very strong finish to take 9th place overall), but the final score was a very respectable 26-30.

Season Opener!

Sorry about the lack of posting over the weekend, but we had a big project being deployed at work, and, sadly, we had to back it out on Sunday because of some problems that were encountered.  So, it was a tough weekend and I was not able to share some important information.  For example, tomorrow is our first league meet of the 2012 season!

Before I get to that, I should point everyone to the results from the Dash in the Dark, which are available at the YellowJacket Racing web site.  Here are some direct links to each of the races:
Girls Blue Relay and Individuals

Boys Blue Relay
Girls Gold Relay
Boys Gold Relay

Tomorrow we kick off the 2012 season with a meet at Mendon Ponds (East Course).  If you are attending, you should park in the "Beach" parking lot.  The starting line and finish line are very close to the entry road to that parking lot.  The runners also come through that area at about the halfway point, and they run parallel to the main road a short time later.

Our opponents this week are Churchville-Chili, East Rochester, Eastridge and Pittsford Mendon.  The Pittsford Mendon boys have an especially strong team (as we saw at the Dash in the Dark), and their girls are quite solid as well.  The other teams are not quite as strong, although they do have some good individuals.  It should be a good meet to start the season.

For new fans, here is a brief description of the scoring: each opponent is considered a separate dual meet.  The top five runners from each team receive their "place" in that dual meet as their score, and the five scores are totaled - low score wins.  Each team has seven runners that can come into play, as the sixth and seventh runners can cause the other team's score to be higher.  27 points or less always wins.  It is possible to win with 28 points.  If the score is 28-28, the faster sixth runner breaks the tie.

Dash In The Dark

Our first interscholastic meet is today!  We are headed to Oakfield-Alabama High School for the "Dash In The Dark".  This is a fun meet that is different than all of the other meets we do during the season.  First, it is a relay race, with each team consisting of three runners.  Second, each leg is only two miles, rather than the usual 5K distance that we cover.  Finally, the "Gold" races (the top three relay teams from each school) are run under the lights around the school grounds - very exciting atmosphere.

Here is the schedule for this evening:

6:00pm - Girls Blue Race
7:05pm - Boys Blue Race
8:10pm - Girls Gold Race
9:05pm - Boys Gold Race

There are reportedly 26 teams entered in the meet; that should make for some exciting races!

If you plan on attending, here are Google Map directions from Schroeder to the meet:

Monroe County Boys Preseason Rankings

The computer did some work on Labor Day, but I took the day off!  As a result, today I can post the results of the preseason analysis for Monroe County.

The top of the list is very similar to what TullyRunners has posted, but there are some notable differences.  First, Thomas is a slight favorite over Rush-Henrietta out of the Class A schools, although Mendon is the consensus choice as the top team overall.  The computer also tucks Brighton in between Thomas and R-H.  Finally, Fairport and Irondequoit are tied at TR, but the computer gives a slight edge to Irondequoit, and I think their depth gives them a little more upside potential and less impact in the event of injury.

The points are close enough together that I think there are seven legitimate contenders for the Monroe County title, depending on how the summer went for everyone, and how the season unfolds.

Anyway, here are the preseason projections:

Mendon 96
Thomas 113
Brighton 130
Rush Henrietta 142
Honeoye Falls Lima 152
Irondequoit 152
Fairport 166
Hilton 189
Schroeder 254
Penfield 284
Sutherland 287
Victor 292
Athena 327
Canandaigua 444
Arcadia 445
Gates Chili 474
Olympia 520
Brockport 526
Churchville Chili 570
East Irondequoit 579
Spencerport 604
Batavia 606
Odyssey 647
East Rochester 652

As with the girls, we have some setbacks to overcome, and several quality teams breathing down our necks; however, we also have a shot at catching up with some of those top teams!

R-H Girls, Not Boys, The Team To Beat

I was a little surprised to see R-H ranked as the top girls team in Section V at TullyRunners, because I thought they seemed too inconsistent.  However, the computer has thrown out last year's seniors, crunched the numbers, and determined that R-H's late-season improvement outweighed the inconsistency, and put them on top, also.  The computer has HF-L in fourth, behind Penfield, but that is likely due to HF-L not putting out full effort in the league meets, which are not considered by TR, but are considered by the computer.  I expect a very close four-way battle among those teams plus Canandaigua.

After a small gap, the computer spits out Victor and Schroeder.  We know the setbacks that we have to overcome to meet and exceed that expectation.  Hilton is a close 7th, followed by a whole batch of quality teams that are just one or two runners from being title contenders: Mendon, Fairport, Irondequoit, Thomas and Sutherland.  I don't think any other teams have much of a chance to crack the top 10, as there is a big gap in the rankings.

Girls preseason rankings are less reliable than the Boys, because it is much easier for newcomers to make a difference.  The rankings do give us a good starting point to examine our league schedule (which, by the way, start in just nine days - against ER, Eastridge, C-C and a team that Webster Schroeder has not beaten since the schools split, Mendon).  Anyway, here is what the computer says:

Rush Henrietta 104
Canandaigua 113
Penfield 119
Honeoye Falls Lima 136
Victor 175
Schroeder 176
Hilton 198
Mendon 233
Fairport 242
Irondequoit 244
Thomas 265
Sutherland 274
Churchville Chili 335
Brighton 371
Brockport 388
Athena 402
East Irondequoit 414
Batavia 535
Gates Chili 659
East Rochester 677

Gold Sweeps - Again

I'm not sure how it  happens, but Gold pulled off their 4th straight victory, the second in a row via a 3-0 sweep of the races.  They won the Boys race, 26-31; the girls race, 26-29 and the JV race, 24-32.  It was a warm evening, with the temperature still at 90 for the start of practice, and not too much cooler by the 6:30 start time.  Despite that, and running without Amanda at her side, Val was only 14 seconds off her meet record.  Will made a strong move early and turned the table on Justin vs. last year.  The impressive stats of the day came on the Boys' side where eight boys beat their best time on the course, and all 17 boys that ran last year improved their times - by an average of 1:59 and a median of 1:41.  Excellent work!  Overall, the girls averaged 1:11 of improvement, with 5 of the 8 girls going an average of 2:07 faster.
