Plenty of Scratches!

It was mostly good news for those on the bubble (or even some of those who thought they missed the bubble).  When the final scratches were posted last night for the State Qualifier meet at Waterloo HS, it appears the following Webster Schroeder tracksters are competing:

Pentathlon - Adam and Nick
Steeplechase - Val and Julia
HH - Deaven
3000 - Amanda and Natalie
800 - Conor
4 x 800 - Katie, Claire, Julia, Amanda, Alyssa, Val
4 x 400 - Val, Emma, Colleen, Alex, Alyssa, Julia
High Jump - Sarah (and Becca, if they take 11 instead of 5), Colton
Pole Vault - Deaven
Long Jump - Alex
Triple Jump - Alex, Jimmy
Shot Put - Bam

We also had some near misses, with Julia rising to 9th in the 800, Katie to 10th in the 1500 and Claire to 10th in the 3000.

The final program should be posted on the Section V Track web site in the near future.

The Waiting is the Hardest Part

Friday is the day for the State Qualifier meet.  Entries were due by Sunday evening, so there is a preliminary list of entrants available on the Section V track site.  However, scratches can be made up until 9pm this evening, meaning the final fields (generally, 8 athletes in each event) will not be set until then.  A couple of our runners are awaiting the final scratches to see if they will make it into the top eight: Conor is ninth in the 800 and Amanda is tenth in the 3000.

The State Qualifier meet is at Waterloo High School, and I believe it starts at 4:30pm, although I don't see that documented anywhere.

Sectional Program is Set

Late last night, the program for the Class AA / Class A Section V Championship became available.  The meet starts at 10am at Penfield HS.  There is some confusion about the order of boys / girls.  There was a note on the Section V web site that listed the order as: Class A Boys, Class AA Boys, Class A Girls, Class AA Girls; however, the program lists the more traditional order, and it is my expectation that this will be the order:

  • Class A Girls
  • Class AA Girls
  • Class A Boys
  • Class AA Boys
The order of events has changed from past years, and now looks like this:
  1. High Hurdles (Pent preceding the individual event)
  2. 4 x 800
  3. 100
  4. Steeplechase
  5. 400
  6. 1500 / 1600
  7. 4 x 100
  8. Intermediate Hurdles
  9. 800
  10. 200
  11. 3000 / 3200
  12. 4 x 400

In the News

Some newspaper coverage that is worth sharing...

Val was the lead story in Sunday's D&C article on the Monroe County Track & Field Championships.

And the Webster Post has a nice photo of Val leaving the water pit in the Steeplechase.

The County meet went quite well for the distance runners.  PRs or SBs were achieved by Val, Julia and Jacob in the Steeplechases, Katie in the 1500, Natalie and Claire in the 3000, John, Zach, Alex and Ben in the 3200, and Conor in the 800.

This followed closely on the heels of Thursday's JV Championships, where PRs / SBs were achieved by Tori in the 1500; Liz, Katie, Elif and Cheyenne in the 800; Brian, Ray in the 1500; Kevin, Andrew Helbig, Dice, Adam, Noah, Marshall, and Nick in the boys 800.  A very nice way to end the season!

Thomas Time!

This Tuesday, it's time to take on the Thomas Titans!  This friendly crosstown rivalry always provides some very exciting races, so be sure to swing by for the 4:30 meet.  It is also Senior Day (for 12th graders, not for AARP members), so if you have a senior on the team, plan on making it by 4pm, as we need to start the intros early to celebrate each senior on the four teams (girls and boys, Schroeder and Thomas).

Light Turnout

So, today was the last Saturday practice of the season, and a grand total of 7 (and a half?) runners made it to the practice.  I am hopeful that everyone else is running on this beautiful day, but I doubt it.  If today was missed, tomorrow should include a run.

Anyway, yesterday included a very fine performance by the distance team at the Marion Invitational.  PRs were the rule, not the exception.  Complete results are available here.

This Weekend

So, two meets today and one tomorrow!

This afternoon, the JV team has a meet at Thomas, with a total of five teams expected for the JV competition.  The track events should get underway at 4:30pm.

Meanwhile, the Varsity team will once again travel to Wayne County, but this time to Marion High School for the Marion Invitational.  This is also scheduled to start at 4:30pm and the meet program is available here.

A small subset of athletes will make the trip to Hilton tomorrow for the Cadet Classic.  Val and Amanda are competing in the top feature event, "The Glavin", which is a 3000m (and 3200m for the boys) race in honor of Pete Glavin, a former McQuaid runner who returned to the area and established the Upstate NY XC Series - one of the premier XC series in the country, and founded the Genesee Valley Harriers.  He also served as meet director for the McQuaid Invitational, before succumbing to a brain tumor in 2010.  These races have posted most of the top local times in these events the past three years.

Last Weekend

Now back to last weekend.  Most of the team traveled to the Wayne Invitational on Friday afternoon, and into the evening.  With pretty decent weather, the distance crew responded with some very nice performances.

We opened with the Steeplechase, and Julia tracked behind Stephanie Wojnowski from Eastridge for most of the race, before turning on the jets late, to win in 8:09, easily a personal best.  Kelsie ran tough throughout the race, did a full immersion on the final water jump, but got back up and finished in 8:30, grabbing sixth place.  In the boys race, Jacob and Peter ran together most of the way, with Jacob pulling away for 5th in 10:53 and Peter finishing in 10:56 for sixth.

Next up were the 4x800 relays.  Alyssa got the team off to a good start, and when Claire and Natalie were done, we had the lead.  Although Morgan didn't hold the lead, she dropped about 5 seconds off her best time to grab 3rd place.  In the boys relay, Justin R got us off to a strong start, and Justin S opened a nice lead over Fairport. Then it was Zach's turn and deja vu set in, as the Fairport runner just about caught him on the first lap, just like at Tuesday's dual meet, but Zach's second lap was about 1.5 seconds faster than his first, and the victory was ensured with Conor's fine anchor leg.

In the 1500, Kara was seeded fourth in the first heat, but went out and took charge early and won the heat by four seconds - a very exciting night for Kara!  Ashlynn was out just a bit too quick in the fast heat, and struggled on the 3rd lap, but finished 10th.  The Killigrew brothers took the track for the 1600m, and Kevin had John nervous enough to keep checking over his shoulder on the final lap, as they battled for the final award, but John managed 4:50 to Kevin's 4:54.

Alyssa and Rachel had decent races in the 800, but neither placed.  The boys race had Justin R, who managed 5th despite being almost 5 seconds slower than leading off the relay and Andrew W, who almost broke 2:15.

The 3000 turned out to be the most exciting event of the meet.  Natalie set the pace pretty much the whole way and Claire ran outside of ther, with girls from Fairport and Geneseo running erratically and leading briefly a couple of times.  Claire made the first move, but it wasn't until the last 200m that things really started heating up, and Natalie took the lead again.  A late charge by the Geneseo girl allowed her to sneak past Claire and then nip Natalie at the wire, but still allowed a very fine 2-3 finish for the Schroeder girls.  Alex and Ben then went to work in the 3200, running very smartly, and clicking off 79-80 second laps before putting up a stunning 72 and 74 second final lap, to run serious PRs of 10:31 and 10:33.

The final distance performance came in the 4x400 relay where Conor led off, and Zach anchored to hold on for a 5th place finish.

Recent Meets

Once again time has been very tight and posting here has fallen victim to other priorities, but I'll try to get in a few quick posts today, to cover some recent happenings, and to look ahead to Friday and Saturday evenings.

So, most recent first...

Monday we traveled to Victor for our third dual meet of the season.  The girls that were healthy and available seemed ready to compete, the boys did not, which was unfortunate because it would have taken top performances for the boys to make it a close meet.  Victor's George Mertens was able to outkick Justin in the 1600 and Conor in the 800 in an impressive display, and Victor.ended up going 1-2 in each of those events.  On the girls side, the absence of Alex and Sarah from the sprinting and jumping events made for a tall order, but the distance girls helped step up and outscored Victor, despite Maggie Lawler's impressive showing in the 1500, getting us to the point where taking two of three relays would win the meet.  Sadly, the 4x100 team was edged out, and the 4x400 team did not manage to pop any good times, ending the hope of a win.

I have misplaced the splits - couldn't find them on Tuesday AM, so those will have to wait.
