More Olympic Trials

So, the swimming has been fun and exciting to watch, but the track athletes are back in action tonight!

There is live coverage from 9-11pm tonight, on NBCSN (the old Vs channel).  I'm hoping they will show almost all of the men's steeplechase live, since it starts at 9:30, as well as most of the women's and men's 5000m races, which start at 10:15 and 10:38, respectively.

The Women's race features Molly Huddle, who won several NYS XC and Track titles about ten years ago, running for Elmira/Notre Dame and is the current American record holder in the event.

The Men's race also features the current American record holder, Bernard Legat (12:53), as well as Galen Rupp, who ran 12:58 earlier this month and Lopez Lomong.  The meet record is still held by a guy by the name of Steve Prefontaine, who ran 13:22 back in 1972.  With three legitimate studs entered, it would not be surprising for an upstart or two (Andrew Bumbalough?) to keep the pace honest early to try to steal a spot on the team.  So, a meet record is a possibility.

Olympic Trials

The Olympic Trials are underway to select the team to represent the United States in Track and Field events at this summer's Olympic Games in London.  You can follow online at this web site.  Tonight's coverage from 7-8pm should include live showing of the men's and women's 400m at 7:20 and 7:35, respectively.

Water Is Only Part Of The Story

As the temperatures are set to climb over the next several days, and everyone is resuming their running routines as school ends, it's a good time to think about hydration.

Runner's World has a short but excellent article, reminding us that hydration is not just about the water.  You need to make sure you are replacing sodium and potassium.  So, make sure you are getting your 8+ glasses of water each day, but also make sure you are replacing electrolytes.

Also, remember to avoid caffeine, as that discourages your body from retaining water.

Congratulations, Val!

Val had an outstanding race at the State Meet on Saturday, to take 4th place, almost catching Leila Mantilla for 3rd on the final lap.  Her final time of 6:52.93 was not only a PR and good for 4th in the state, but is the 4th fastest high school time recorded in the US this year, according to milesplit.com!

Complete results from the State Meet are available http://www.leonetiming.com/2012/Outdoor/States/">here.  Don't forget to look for Alex in the Long Jump and Alex and Jimmy in the Triple Jump (Friday Field Events).

NY State Track Championships

Val, Alex and Jimmy will be representing Webster Schroeder at the State Meet this weekend.  It's just a short drive (under 90 minutes: 104 East to 370 East to 31 East) over to Cicero-North Syracuse High School for the competition.

Val will be running the 2000m Steeplechase, and Alex and Jimmy are both competing in the Triple Jump, after winning their respective titles at the State Qualifier meet, and Alex made the Long Jump standard as well.

Leone Timing will again be doing the results, so there should be live results available.  Entries are currently posted for the Girls and Boys.

Milesplit has an excellent preview of the Boys events - perhaps the Girls events will be previewed by tomorrow.

400th Post

Wow, I just happened to notice that there are 399 previous postings, so this is number 400.  This is just a quick note about today's State Qualifier track meet.  Of course, Val is running the Steeplechase, but our boys 4x800 made it in, from the 10th seed, following two scratches.  And Alaina made it in the 3000, where despite being the eighth and final entrant in Division 1, she has a chance to beat about half the girls in the race, since only two Divison 2 girls have broken 11 minutes.

Some information about the meet: starts at 5pm at Penn Yan HS.  Rain is expected and any lightning would delay the meet by at least 30 minutes.  They will try their best to get the meet in, regardless of how late it goes (to some limit), or continue the meet on Saturday afternoon.  The current list of entrants is available.
