Orienteering

The next Rochester Orienteering Club event is on Sunday. It is quite convenient, as it starts from the Bayview YMCA. You may start between noon and 2pm. I recommend starting early, so you have time to do a second course. The courses are short, but hilly.

I should be there before noon, if you want any last minute tips before you go out.

Sectionals

Based on the seedings for Sectionals, Edison is a lock to win the team title. We have a decent shot at finishing second, if everyone manages to repeat (or improve upon) their County meet performance. Here is the Sectional scoring prediction, based on the current seeds:

1) Edison 84 - 60 in events under 400m + 16 in 4x1 and 4x4
2) Schroeder 49.5 - 20 in relays
3) Rush-Henrietta 44 - zero in flat 100-3200, 4x1 and 4x4
4) Hilton 37 - saving Fontanez for a relay will add to this total
5) Irondequoit 33 - 20 in shot / discus
6) Fairport 31
7) Brockport 26
8) Athena 24
McQuaid 24 - 22 from Bell; 2 from the rest of the team
10)Thomas 23
11)Gates 22
12)Spencerport 17
Penfield 17
14)Canandaigua 9
15)Wilson 6
16)Churchville 3.5

Let's see if we can top 50 points!

Monroe County Champions!

The boys track team turned in an outstanding performance on Saturday, almost across the board, to win the team title at the Monroe County Championships. We scored a very nice 91 points, to 82 for R-H, 65.5 for Hilton (with Fontanez "only" scoring 31). Complete results are available here.

The Distance Team contributed from start to end. In the Steeplechase, Nico had the momentum and was closing in on Jared, who finished 3rd, when he hit the barrier with 300m to go, fell, and ended up 5th, which was good for our first 4 points of the day.

3000m Steeplechase
Nico 81 2:41 4:00 5:21 6:42 8:03 9:25 10:10 - 81 80 79 81 81 81 82 45
Nate 82 2:41 4:01 5:23 6:48 8:14 9:42 10:26 - 82 79 80 82 85 86 88 44

Geoff and Kenny both put up PRs in the 3200. Was Kenny's effort good enough to make it into Sectionals? We'll find out at noon on Wednesday.

3200
Kenny 76 2:31 3:49 5:09 6:28 7:46 9:04 10:18 - 76 75 78 80 79 78 78 74

AJ showed patience early and speed late, as he blazed to a 1:57, after a 59-ish first 400. That was good for third place and 6 points.

Finally, the meet wound up with the 4x800 and we led almost the whole way in winning with an 8:13. Although we won by just about 5 seconds, Brighton had Geary anchoring, and the outcome was still in doubt until AJ took off with 300m to go.

4 x 800
Ryan 61.4 2:01.86
Steve 63.6 2:07.72
Nico 58.5 2:03.09
AJ 60.9 2:00.73

Happy Birthday, Coach Lyons's Father!

Yes, the old man celebrated our victory over Hilton by having a birthday today, since he was unable to make it to town for Vanzo's birthday yesterday.

That was a great team win yesterday. The wins in the 1600 and 3200 were big, in allowing us to only need one relay win to clinch. Not that I have any doubt that we would have won the 4x800 with the meet on the line.

Old Results

Well, not that old, but I haven't had time to type in splits, so I'll catch up with the Penfield results, but first:

Keep in mind there is no dual meet this week, so we have one last week for some serious work before we ease up for championship season.

From last Wednesday (I imagine it has been a few years since Schroeder has posted two sub-4:40 times in a single 1600m race. Not to mention having 5 4x800 relays - that must be a school record)...

Penfield Preview

Our meet against Penfield will be their second meet of the week. They lost to Gates-Chili on Monday, 79-62. That bodes well for our chances overall.

The Distance Team will have its work cut out, however, as Greg Redfield, the Section V 2008 Class AA XC Champion, leads them. In a mid-April dual meet, he ran 4:38 in the 1600 (but lost to Brian Hotchkiss of R-H). Later in that meet, he ran 9:59 for the 3200.

Also in the 1600, Tom Elliot has run 4:45, while Mike Cauwels (7th at XC Sectionals) has only run 4:54, so far (as has Jamie Hospers).

In the 800, there don't seem to have been great individual performances, but they did run 8:32 for the 4 x 800 last weekend. Redfield has run 2:06, Cauwels 2:09, Hospers 2:10 and Elliot 2:11.

Finally, in the 3200, Elliot has run 10:21, Hospers 10:35, and Tyler Gumina (10th at XC Sectionals) has only run 10:36.

Cadet Classic

It was unfortunate that the weather conditions soured enough prior to the 4x800m relay, to scare the Webster teams away. Corning set a meet record, winning in 8:08, and Hilton and Thomas both ran 8:20, and with Brighton at 8:27, it would have been a lot of fun to be in the mix.

Prior to that, there were some very nice performances. For the girls, Becka opened the meet with a 9:13 in the Steeple. Anneliese had a PR in the 1500, running 5:21.

The boys efforts all started in the Steeplechase, with Kenny just missing the 11-minute barrier while holding off a Mendon opponent. Joe knocked some time off his last effort, leaping his way to 12:13, while Afro Thunder struggled a bit.

The 800m was setup as an invitational race, with the last heat limited to just the top 8 seeds. Running in the penultimate heat, Vanzo almost cracked the top 8 - his 2:02.32 was just 0.07 seconds out. Nico never found that extra gear, but finished in 2:06. Then in the last heat, AJ waited in 8th place just a little too long and the leaders broke away with just over 300m to go. But AJ finished with a solid 2:01.98 and a better idea of what it's like to race with the big boys.

In the 3200m run, Nate, along with Jared and Cole from Thomas, felt dissed, by not being accepted into the Premier heat. Running as a tight pack, they came thru the mile in 5:04, before slowing slightly. The final 400 was very quick, with Nate putting up a 70, to finish with a negative-split 10:07, Jared's closing 68 was even better, while Cole was unable to muster better than a 76. Only 8 of the 15 runners in the Premier heat managed to beat Nate.

Finally, Nico returned for the 1600m and ran a solid second event in 4:50, with Whitty following him almost the whole way to a 4:53 PR.

Special kudos to former Distance Runner, AB, who rode out the storm to stick around for the 400 IH, while everyone else was looking for the bus, and finished 2nd in 58.26.

Next up is Penfield on Wednesday. We know all about Greg Redfield, Class AA Champion in XC (and 10th at State), but what else do they have? Find out tomorrow.
