Putting the V in JV

Last Thursday, our JV squads closed out their season with the JV County Championships.  The V clearly stood for Victory, as several runners won their events or their heats.

For the girls, Colleen was the only entrant in the 400m run, and came away with the win in 64.33.  Nanaka finally broke the 2:40 barrier, after knocking on the door several times, placing 2nd in 2:37.82.  Rachel N also ran well in that event, nearly getting under the 3-minute mark.  In the 1500, Kelsie had a fine run, but finished just outside the top 8 in 5:38.  Kara had a huge PR in 5:52 and Ashlynn also managed to get under 6 minutes.  Rachel B continued her dramatic post-injury improvement, running 6:10, and I believe Megan also squeaked out a PR in 6:24.  Claire was the lone entrant in the 3000 and was not able to match her times from earlier this season.  Finally, the 4x800 "A" team was able to average just over 2:55, to earn 5th place behind the usual suspects (Thomas, Hilton, Mendon and Victor) and the "B" team ran 12:49 for 8th place.

The boys had a field day on the track.  The meet started off with the 3000m Steeplechase, and Jacob D ran a smart race (splits: 85, 87, 90, 92, 92, 92, 90, 40) to knock off a tough HF-L competitor in a Stadium Record 11:08, which is also safely under the provisional standard for Sectionals.  Ben G followed that up with a win in the 400m dash.

The 1600m had five heats, and we were represented in each one.  In the first heat, Nick T went under 88 on his final lap, to PR by a large margin, in 6:22.  Next up, Dice was competitive in the second heat, breaking 5:30 for the first time.  Ray to charge in the third heat, to win comfortably, breaking 5:10 as well as 5:20 for the first time, running 72 on the last lap to finish in 5:08.  Nick S just missed the 6-minute barrier.  Ben and Aaron were in the fourth heat, with Ben running a perfect pace: 76, 75, 75, 76, and finishing in 5:02, while Aaron managed to slide under his PR in 5:10.  Kevin was the lone representative in the final heat, and ran smart to almost catch HFL's Douglas at the wire, running 4:52.00.

There were seven heats in the 800m.  Cooper was in the second heat and is still trying to get back after his long hiatus.  Next was Justin T, just getting a PR in 2:38.  Dice was back from the 1600 and almost made his first foray under 2:30, missing by 0.08 seconds.  We had four runners in the fifth heat, all running an excellent race together - leading much of the way, with Ray and Brian coming thru in 69, followed by Noah, then Phil.  One other runner got into the mix on the second lap, but Ray pulled off his second heat win of the after noon, finishing in 2:20.00.  Phil and Noah closed quickly to also finish in 2:20, while Brian was right behind in 2:21.  I think their PRs were all 2:27-2:30 heading into this race.  Conor was in the final heat, and was all alone after turning 63 for the first lap.  He held on well to finish in 2:08 for an easy win.

The 3200m run featured Jake E, Alex C and Steven, the latter being the one setting the early pace, as Jake and Alex were content hitting the planned 82/83 laps, Steven started with a couple of 81s.  He held on into the 5th lap, after coming thru the mile in 5:29, with Alex and just ahead of Jake's 5:30.  The sixth lap slowed (84s for Jake and Alex, 87 for Steven), and that's when Jake started to move, getting back to 82, then finishing with a 76, for an excellent 10:53.  Alex couldn't quite get the 11-minute barrier, running 11:02, missing 8th place by 0.11 seconds.  Steven managed 11:12, a sizable PR.

We had two 4x800 relays, with the "A" team placing 4th, and bringing the team score to 47, all of which were scored on the track in races of 400m or more.  Kevin (2:17), Jacob D (2:20), Jake E (2:23 off the 3200) and Conor (2:14) participated.  The B team took 9th with Ray (2:28), Phil (2:34), Brian (2:30) and Ben (2:20).

Looking Ahead

Today we have our final JV meet, at home on the Thomas track.  Tomorrow is our final invitational of the season.  The Royal Comet at Rush-Henrietta starts at 10am and meet information is available here.  I have not yet seen a list of entries at yentiming.com.

Next week will see us competing at the JV County meet on Thursday (not sure of the location, but Sports Schedules Online says that the girls run at Penfield and the boys run at Eastridge).  This will mark the end of the season for those who have not made the qualifying standards for Counties or Sectionals.  So, great freedom will be provided at JV Counties, in order that each runner can try for a final PR in their favorite event (or possibly even make a Sectional qualifying time).  The Varsity meet follows on Saturday, at Victor.

BTW, I have not been able to find the County standards online, but the Sectional standards are available here (we have to meet the Class AA standards).
