Looking ahead to tomorrow's scheduled meet, here are the top R-H performances from indoor track:

1600

Sean Day 4:41.3
Trevor Newton 4:44.8
Nate Kozyra 4:44.9
Brian Hotchkiss 4:47.9

1000
Sean Day 2:37.4

We have a shot at scoring in any of those events. R-H is also a very large team, so there should be someone for everyone to chase!

Too Bad

So, all because field event dudes are too wimpy, our scrimmage at Wayne was canceled yesterday. Nice to hear that there was a 4000m relay competition instead, with some sprinters joining in the fun.

It is important to note that 1 mile is not 1.5 miles.

More Orienteering Notes

Anyone considering making the trip to West Point should plan on competing in the Rochester Orienteering Club's icebreaker event on Sunday, April 5th at Cobbs Hill Park (right at the Culver Rd exit off of 490 - better directions coming soon). The entry fee should be $3 for all juniors. I'll be orienteering at a big meet in Cincinnati, so I won't be there. You should plan on completing the Yellow course, then going out and doing as much of the Orange course as possible (perhaps with a 60-75 minute time limit). You can start as early as noon, and you have to start the Orange course before 2pm.

Scrimmage

We have a scrimmage at Wayne on Thursday. Some of the distance runners will prove how tough they are, by racing 3.5 miles (well, slightly less, since they are metric distance races).

In the merge of the Sectional boys races, Wayne was 11th and we were 12th, so there should be some good competition in the distance races.

Of course, before the scrimmage, we have one more workout to get through on Tuesday! And it looks like the weather will cooperate and allow us to run a little quicker.

Orienteering Training

The next orienteering training session will be from 12:30 to 2:15 on Sunday, March 22. We will meet at the small parking lot near the XC course starting line.

Be Prepared!

I was never a boy scout, but I know their motto applies in many areas, and one of those is track practice.

Bring a watch! Some runners were able to write down all of their splits AFTER the workout was over. This is a good thing. No, they are not idiot savants, they have a watch that can remember a few splits. When we do workouts that have a fair amount of rest between reps, we can afford to write times down between each interval; in a workout like yesterday's, there is not enough time.

Bring extra clothes! Yes, I know all teenage boys like to show how tough they are by wearing as little as possible in cold weather, but that is not what's best for your running. Bring more than you think is necessary. You don't have to wear it, but it provides a nice insurance policy when the lake keeps things several degrees cooler in Webster than "at the airport".

Plan your food and drink intake! Skipping lunch and chowing down some pizza right before a workout = bad idea. Forgetting to drink water consistently throughout the day also = bad idea. You can get away with poor planning on easy days. On hard days, you don't want to make things harder than they are designed to be.

Track Season Is Open!

OK, yes, I'm about a week behind, but track practice started last Monday for the captains and rookies and Tuesday for the veterans. The distance team got off to a good start, with decent attendance and a couple of good workouts. Notably missing were some musical performers, tennis and lacrosse players and someone who may have been off celebrating his 18th birthday.

Today's weather report says there is a chance of hitting 60 degrees on this glorious St. Patrick's Day, so we will be making our 2009 debut on the Thomas track for today's workout.

Remember, our scrimmage is just 9 days away, and the first meet is two weeks from tomorrow.

Sam Ludgreat

Webster's only representative at the New York State Indoor Track Championship Meet wasn't a distance runner, but he made the most of his visit to Cornell yesterday.

Perhaps Sam Ludgood should change his name after yesterday's performance. He went 47 feet, 4 inches in the triple jump, to win the event.

Congratulations, Sam!

Speaking of Track, it looks like tomorrow's practice is for Outdoor Track newbies only, and the real work will begin on Tuesday. Nate is thinking about hanging around anyway, to get a veteran group run going.

My Shoe's Untied!

Don't let that happen to you in a race! In fact, it's no fun being in the middle of a run and having to stop to tie your shoe, then run to catch the group (the days of a Webster Distance Runner group stopping to wait for someone to tie their shoe are over). The high-tech laces seem to be slipperier than the old days. Double knots work pretty well. In a race, using tape to serve double duty (keeping your spike on your foot in the mud and keeping your lace tied) is an OK solution.

Here is a more general solution: learn a couple of different knots. There is a recent Attackpoint thread that sends you to a Runner's World article and this web site for instructions.

Webster Orienteering Team

There was a very nice turnout for the first orienteering training session last Saturday. The next session will be this Sunday from 4-6pm, again at Nate's house. We will do a few indoor orienteering training activities, and then head out on an actual orienteering map (but on a very simple course). A very nice "Outdoor Track Eve" training session.

I will be out of town for your "mid-term exam", but put it on your calendars now: the Rochester Orienteering Club has a meet scheduled for Sunday, April 5th at 12pm, from the Tay House at Cobbs Hill Park. The plan will be for everyone to complete the Yellow course, then go out and do as much of the Orange course as possible (although some of you may choose to go directly out on the Orange course).
