Both the boys and girls opened the Monroe County league meet schedule by taking three out of four dual meets yesterday. Both teams had convincing wins over Churchville-Chili, Eastridge and East Rochester, while giving Mendon a bit of a battle.
The boys were first and the race went out slow, with Jacob Hanns of ER being the early leader, as Mendon held back. Our boys took advantage of a good line from the start to the first turn to be well-represented up front. Mendon started to move up during the second mile, but Will was able to open a decent lead. Early in the third mile, we were still within striking distance, but Zach and Peter were starting to fade. Justin made a very strong move late to finish second behind Will, and John was able to get past Mendon's 5-6-7 pack and almost caught their fourth runner in the process.
The girls race was quite similar. Mendon went out easy, so Karli O'Neill took a big lead early, as Val ran with Amanda. When it was clear that Amanda was going to be third, Val picked it up a bit, but Karli's lead was too big and she settled for second. In the meantime, Natalie, Katie and Julia gamely chased the Mendon girls, but didn't have quite enough to stay with them (except Katie, who had a very strong finish to take 9th place overall), but the final score was a very respectable 26-30.
