So, the state meet is back at Sunken Meadows State Park. I was at an XC State Meet there for the first time back in 1968, when a coach I know led his Lowville team to the state title. I did not return in 1974 or 1992, but I did go back in 2002 when my alma mater, East Aurora, led by Dan Field's (my step-brother), 4th place finish, competed at the state meet after a 7-year hiatus (although individuals went every year). In addition, my brother's team from Addison grabbed 2nd place, led by future Olympian(?) Bryan Morseman.
Some state meet history is available from the NYS Sportswriters' Web site. There I learned two interesting (to me) facts about the 1968 state meet:
1) the late, great Charlie McMullen won the Class B title that year, 8 seconds ahead of Lowville's top runner, Leon Brown, who finished 5th.
2) Donny Sauer, host of the awesome Mud Run in Boston, NY, finished 5th in the Class C race.
I wish I could head down there this weekend. The East Aurora girls have a shot at winning. I could cheer for the EA boys to knock off HF-L. Addison's Carey Crooker will be in the girls D race. And I'd also be interested in watching the Thomas kids that made it (Brimmer, Jared and Brianna), the Brockport boys (good luck, Audra), and Mendon.
And, speaking of the state meet, don't forget to swing by tullyrunners.com to see his state meet predictions.
