Season Opener!

Sorry about the lack of posting over the weekend, but we had a big project being deployed at work, and, sadly, we had to back it out on Sunday because of some problems that were encountered.  So, it was a tough weekend and I was not able to share some important information.  For example, tomorrow is our first league meet of the 2012 season!

Before I get to that, I should point everyone to the results from the Dash in the Dark, which are available at the YellowJacket Racing web site.  Here are some direct links to each of the races:
Girls Blue Relay and Individuals

Boys Blue Relay
Girls Gold Relay
Boys Gold Relay

Tomorrow we kick off the 2012 season with a meet at Mendon Ponds (East Course).  If you are attending, you should park in the "Beach" parking lot.  The starting line and finish line are very close to the entry road to that parking lot.  The runners also come through that area at about the halfway point, and they run parallel to the main road a short time later.

Our opponents this week are Churchville-Chili, East Rochester, Eastridge and Pittsford Mendon.  The Pittsford Mendon boys have an especially strong team (as we saw at the Dash in the Dark), and their girls are quite solid as well.  The other teams are not quite as strong, although they do have some good individuals.  It should be a good meet to start the season.

For new fans, here is a brief description of the scoring: each opponent is considered a separate dual meet.  The top five runners from each team receive their "place" in that dual meet as their score, and the five scores are totaled - low score wins.  Each team has seven runners that can come into play, as the sixth and seventh runners can cause the other team's score to be higher.  27 points or less always wins.  It is possible to win with 28 points.  If the score is 28-28, the faster sixth runner breaks the tie.

Dash In The Dark

Our first interscholastic meet is today!  We are headed to Oakfield-Alabama High School for the "Dash In The Dark".  This is a fun meet that is different than all of the other meets we do during the season.  First, it is a relay race, with each team consisting of three runners.  Second, each leg is only two miles, rather than the usual 5K distance that we cover.  Finally, the "Gold" races (the top three relay teams from each school) are run under the lights around the school grounds - very exciting atmosphere.

Here is the schedule for this evening:

6:00pm - Girls Blue Race
7:05pm - Boys Blue Race
8:10pm - Girls Gold Race
9:05pm - Boys Gold Race

There are reportedly 26 teams entered in the meet; that should make for some exciting races!

If you plan on attending, here are Google Map directions from Schroeder to the meet:

Monroe County Boys Preseason Rankings

The computer did some work on Labor Day, but I took the day off!  As a result, today I can post the results of the preseason analysis for Monroe County.

The top of the list is very similar to what TullyRunners has posted, but there are some notable differences.  First, Thomas is a slight favorite over Rush-Henrietta out of the Class A schools, although Mendon is the consensus choice as the top team overall.  The computer also tucks Brighton in between Thomas and R-H.  Finally, Fairport and Irondequoit are tied at TR, but the computer gives a slight edge to Irondequoit, and I think their depth gives them a little more upside potential and less impact in the event of injury.

The points are close enough together that I think there are seven legitimate contenders for the Monroe County title, depending on how the summer went for everyone, and how the season unfolds.

Anyway, here are the preseason projections:

Mendon 96
Thomas 113
Brighton 130
Rush Henrietta 142
Honeoye Falls Lima 152
Irondequoit 152
Fairport 166
Hilton 189
Schroeder 254
Penfield 284
Sutherland 287
Victor 292
Athena 327
Canandaigua 444
Arcadia 445
Gates Chili 474
Olympia 520
Brockport 526
Churchville Chili 570
East Irondequoit 579
Spencerport 604
Batavia 606
Odyssey 647
East Rochester 652

As with the girls, we have some setbacks to overcome, and several quality teams breathing down our necks; however, we also have a shot at catching up with some of those top teams!

R-H Girls, Not Boys, The Team To Beat

I was a little surprised to see R-H ranked as the top girls team in Section V at TullyRunners, because I thought they seemed too inconsistent.  However, the computer has thrown out last year's seniors, crunched the numbers, and determined that R-H's late-season improvement outweighed the inconsistency, and put them on top, also.  The computer has HF-L in fourth, behind Penfield, but that is likely due to HF-L not putting out full effort in the league meets, which are not considered by TR, but are considered by the computer.  I expect a very close four-way battle among those teams plus Canandaigua.

After a small gap, the computer spits out Victor and Schroeder.  We know the setbacks that we have to overcome to meet and exceed that expectation.  Hilton is a close 7th, followed by a whole batch of quality teams that are just one or two runners from being title contenders: Mendon, Fairport, Irondequoit, Thomas and Sutherland.  I don't think any other teams have much of a chance to crack the top 10, as there is a big gap in the rankings.

Girls preseason rankings are less reliable than the Boys, because it is much easier for newcomers to make a difference.  The rankings do give us a good starting point to examine our league schedule (which, by the way, start in just nine days - against ER, Eastridge, C-C and a team that Webster Schroeder has not beaten since the schools split, Mendon).  Anyway, here is what the computer says:

Rush Henrietta 104
Canandaigua 113
Penfield 119
Honeoye Falls Lima 136
Victor 175
Schroeder 176
Hilton 198
Mendon 233
Fairport 242
Irondequoit 244
Thomas 265
Sutherland 274
Churchville Chili 335
Brighton 371
Brockport 388
Athena 402
East Irondequoit 414
Batavia 535
Gates Chili 659
East Rochester 677

Gold Sweeps - Again

I'm not sure how it  happens, but Gold pulled off their 4th straight victory, the second in a row via a 3-0 sweep of the races.  They won the Boys race, 26-31; the girls race, 26-29 and the JV race, 24-32.  It was a warm evening, with the temperature still at 90 for the start of practice, and not too much cooler by the 6:30 start time.  Despite that, and running without Amanda at her side, Val was only 14 seconds off her meet record.  Will made a strong move early and turned the table on Justin vs. last year.  The impressive stats of the day came on the Boys' side where eight boys beat their best time on the course, and all 17 boys that ran last year improved their times - by an average of 1:59 and a median of 1:41.  Excellent work!  Overall, the girls averaged 1:11 of improvement, with 5 of the 8 girls going an average of 2:07 faster.
