It should be an exciting meet for the boys today - against Canandaigua at the Webster Thomas track. The distance team has to be flawless and earn a 32-0 win in the 1600, 800, 3200 and 4x800, as well as contribute to a win in the 4x400 relay, in order for the team to get the 71 points needed for a dual meet win.
The girls had a chance to knock off Canandaigua, despite their top-notch distance team, but it looks like injuries will prevent a serious challenge.
Today's meet could be closer than last Wednesday's 72-69 victory over Thomas. The scouting report had only showed 58 highly likely points, but with good performances, other points were available. The distance team did a great job of grabbing those available points. In the 1600, Justin turned on an incredible kick to run a 63.6 last lap and a 4:45.6 overall for the win. In the 800, Justin came back with another fierce kick and teamed with Alex to go 1-3 and double the expected 3 points. The 3200 was expected to be all Thomas, as 3 runners had bested Zach's big PR of a week ago. But Josh couldn't keep up early on, then Kevin dropped off, leaving Zach and Keith. Zach's 69 second last 400 was good enough for the win in 10:28, meaning only 2 relay wins were needed.
We got the first relay win when Thomas messed up their second hand-off in the 4x100. Thomas's studly sprinter got by Ethan in the last leg of the 4x400, setting up a showdown in the 4x800. Peter led of with a nice 2:13.9 and John just about kept pace on the second leg. Justin, coming off the 4x4, went out in 67, but came back in 62.6 to give Alex a 3-second lead. Although the Thomas anchor caught him at the 200m mark, Alex held him off and by the 550m mark it was clear that their anchor was tying up, and Alex opened things up for the win.
The girls meet was just as exciting, with points leaking and being recaptured, until Val anchored the 4x400 relay to clinch the meet by a 72.5 to 68.5 score.
